Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser
Every day, a thousand voices compete for our attention. From the screens in our pockets to the billboards on our streets, the world is telling us who to be, what to value, and where to find our worth. But somewhere in the midst of all these voices, a timeless warning speaks through Scripture: “See to it that no one takes you captive.” Not captive by force, but captive by a mindset. Not trapped by walls, but trapped by a worldview that ignores the King of Kings. As followers of Christ, we must remain alert, guarding our hearts and minds against the subtle drift away from the truth. This is because the battle for our faith often begins in our thinking. Today, we stop drifting. Today, we stand guard. It’s time to break free from the traditions of men and ground ourselves in the truth of Christ in this article.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (Colossians 2:8 ESV)
Another version, the NIV says, 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
The word “captive” paints the picture of someone with a rope around their neck, being led naked through the streets in humiliation. The Bible warns us not to be taken captive or led away by the philosophies of this world. We must therefore guard ourselves against worldly mindsets. One of the enemy’s primary methods of deception is to present the traditions and values of the world as normal. Worldly philosophy attempts to define what families and marriages should look like. It tells us that adultery and divorce are normal, that children going astray is inevitable, and that living and dying in debt is simply a part of life. It presents lying, bribery, and corruption as acceptable because “everyone is doing it.” It also treats sex before marriage and fornication as normal. However, something does not become right simply because society accepts or practises it. As believers, we must examine every philosophy and tradition in the light of God’s Word.
The Bible warns that one of the ways Satan seeks to take us captive is through philosophy. Philosophy is essentially a system or way of thinking. It can also refer to “plausible but faulty or misleading argumentation.” This passage is not merely addressing isolated thoughts. It is warning us about entire systems of thought that shape how we understand ourselves, the world, and God. The Bible therefore cautions us not to be taken captive by hollow and deceptive ways of thinking that depend on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.
The KJV says it this way: Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Chris. Every day, we face the temptation to be taken captive by hollow philosophies and empty deception. We would be deceiving ourselves if we failed to recognise that we have an adversary who seeks to mislead us and draw us away from Christ. We must remain alert to Satan’s strategies. To beware means to be cautious, watchful, and on guard. It brings to mind a soldier standing at their post, fully alert because an enemy is nearby. This imagery reminds us that we are engaged in a spiritual battle. As Christians, we are in constant conflict with the kingdom of darkness and its forces. We cannot fall asleep at our posts, take leave, or seek a discharge from this battle. We must remain continually vigilant. If we fail to guard ourselves against the devil’s deception, he can take us captive and rob us of the spiritual riches we possess in Christ.
" If we fail to guard ourselves against the devil’s deception, he can take us captive and rob us of the spiritual riches we possess in Christ. "
The Bible’s warning here is not limited to individual thoughts that are wrong. It also addresses entire philosophies, such as evolution, humanism, materialism, and any other worldview that contradicts biblical truth. Everyone has a philosophy. Pessimism and optimism are philosophies, and every culture has a particular outlook that shapes how its people think and respond. Philosophies programme people to react in predictable ways. Therefore, if people want to change their responses, they must first change the beliefs and philosophies underlying them. The basic philosophies of this world will attempt to take you captive. They will tell you, “That is simply the way things are,” causing you to accept the enemy’s attacks because everyone considers them normal. However, when your life is founded on Christ, your perspective begins to change completely. You recognise that the world’s philosophy is not your foundation, and you can confidently declare, “Wait a minute. That is not what my life is built upon, and it does not reflect the One who lives within me.”
Many modern philosophies stand in opposition to Scripture. Certain approaches within modern psychology can conflict with biblical teaching, particularly when they place responsibility for a person’s choices entirely on other people or past experiences. At first, this perspective may seem comforting because it appears to remove personal guilt and responsibility. However, it can also rob us of our God-given authority to choose how we respond. If we believe that other people are entirely responsible for our condition, we may resign ourselves to living as victims. We cannot change the past or control the actions of others, but we can take responsibility for our own decisions and responses. God’s Word teaches that we do not have to remain defeated by what has happened to us. By His grace, we can choose to move forward, overcome our circumstances, and walk in the victory He has made available to us. “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19). Satan cannot violate your choice, and God will not violate it.
Haven’t you heard people claim that growing up in a “dysfunctional” family caused them to commit terrible crimes? Our environment can certainly influence us, but it does not remove our personal responsibility. If we were merely products of our environment, everyone raised under similar circumstances would respond in the same way. Yet siblings from the same household can make completely different choices and follow very different paths. Human beings are not creatures of instinct alone, compelled to respond automatically to their surroundings. We were created in the image of Almighty God and given the capacity to make moral choices. With that privilege comes the responsibility to discern between right and wrong and to choose accordingly.
This kind of philosophy lies at the root of much of the error found within the body of Christ today. The Bible reveals God’s system of thought, His divine philosophy for living. His truth is timeless and remains the only reliable foundation, regardless of society’s latest trends or “politically correct” opinions. We must allow God’s Word to govern our minds and shape how we understand ourselves, our circumstances, and the world around us. Only when our thinking aligns with His truth will we experience the results His Word promises.
