There Is A Higher Labour

Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him” (John 6:27).

More than seven hundred years before Jesus made this pronouncement, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah and asked this question: “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy?” (Isa. 55:2). What is life about? Why did God create us? We are engaged and energetic in many activities – doing business, working day in and day out, busy with schoolwork and the list of activities goes on. Of course, working hard is good if you want to succeed in what you are doing.  However, this life is not all about hard work and making money.

Many are very hard-working people in this world, having little rest in order to earn money to cater for themselves and their families. Working hard is commendable but is that all life is about? Do you think God made you for worldly business only? Were you made only to work and get commendation and award in worldly business? Will the Lord say: “Well done, you good and faithful servant?” There is a higher award which is greater than academic, business or award from the queen. We must labour for that which is of eternal value. Jesus put His command in one sentence. ‘Don’t work for the food which perishes but for that which lasts forever and gives eternal life’.
