“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. (John 10:11-13)
All of us have people in our lives that we can think of as being there for us, people we can trust, they love us, and we love them in return. But God is the kind of shepherd who is always available. No other person can say to you I will always be with you. There are a lot of people who would like to say that. Husbands and wives who love each other will say I will never leave you nor forsake you. But you need to know that one of these days, death is coming. No one can say I will always be available. We have a shepherd who said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”.
Notice what He said elsewhere: He said, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mat. 28:20). God has said, “never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). And when He was about to leave this earth He said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever” (John 14:16). He was not talking about His second coming, but at Pentecost the Holy Spirit came to anoint the believers in Christ. Jesus Christ was coming in the person of the Holy Spirit to live in us and live through our lives. So, every single believer has the good shepherd, the Holy Spirit to guide them. The person of the Holy Spirit living inside of us and guiding us every step of the way. He is always available.
