“We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).
When you hear advice that tries to help you to escape your responsibility, rather than face up to it, leave it. That’s not a godly counsel. Godly counsel will always point you to what’s your responsibility. What’s my responsibility in this situation? I think about young people who go through circumstances, where they and their family don’t get along and someone comes and says, “you don’t have to stay at home, you just have to leave”. And most often that’s the beginning of the destruction of a young person’s life. And what do they do? They find themselves in the midst of their peers, doing everything imaginable that’s unscriptural, ungodly and not Christlike.
We have to be very careful when we make suggestions or when we give counsel to anyone, because if they believe in you, if they trust you, and they follow your counsel, they can destroy their lives, if you are not wise and godly in what you tell them to do. And often times, people will give counsel and say this is what I will do if I were you. This is what I think; you don’t have that responsibility. But all of us have responsibilities for our circumstances. I may not like my responsibility, but I have a responsibility. I may not like my circumstance, but I have the responsibility to be obedient to God in that circumstance no matter what. So, when somebody counsels you to walk away from your responsibilities, my friend you must be very sensitive. Is this what God will say? To tell me to walk away from my responsibilities. Absolutely not!
