Discern What’s Godly And What’s Ungodly Counsel

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Pro. 15: 22).

How can you detect whether the counsel you are receiving is a godly counsel? Here are some of the ways that you can detect whether the counsel you are receiving is godly. If you are talking to someone about your family, career, education, finances, or some decisions that you are making, how can you detect that what you are hearing is godly or ungodly counsel. One evidence of ungodly counsel is when there’s no mention of God, the Bible or Jesus Christ. If you are in any situation that you are seeking wise counsel, if there’s no mention of Jesus, no mention of God, no mention of the Bible, then get out of the place because godly wise counsel is wrapped up in the teachings and principles of the word of God. And so, one evidence of ungodly counsel is if there is no mention of God, the Bible or prayer.

The second evidence is that there will be absence of prayer not just no mention of it, there will be absence of prayer. If you are seeking wise godly counsel and then you talk and talk and talk and nobody says let’s pray, nobody says why don’t we ask God. Why don’t we ask God to direct us?

Most times a person who is a counsellor will not mention about prayer or will not pray, the implication is, I have the answer, I can answer your request.  Any wise counsellor knows that prayer is a vital part of counselling and if you can get a person who is talking to God and listening to Him, then you have moved a step forward in the whole counselling process. If that person never attempts to pray, never asks you to pray, never leads you to pray, never talks to you about prayer, then find yourself another counsellor.

Third evidence is a sudden defence of the counsellor of unscriptural actions. For example, immoral things. If somebody is doing this, then you also must do this or that. You hear them say something against the teachings of scripture.  If they did this, then you have to do the same thing back. There’s nothing in the Bible that says I should take vengeance no matter what they do.
