There are times when we need to be a Nathan to a David who is in trouble and drifting from the faith. If you see people disappearing from the work of the Lord and the church, don’t just let it happen by letting them go. I know that confronting people is not easy. Sometimes it could be one of the hardest things that we have to do, especially if we have to rebuke someone. But it has to be done at times, and I know that God will give us the courage, wisdom, and boldness to do it.
It’s really a matter of caring about others and putting another person’s interests and needs ahead of our own. Nathan risked his life to do what he did, for a king in the ancient world held the power of life and death over his subjects.
As king, David had power in the nation, and he could have exercised his right to have Nathan exiled or even executed for daring to accuse him. But David was restored because he had a Nathan to call his attention and not let him drift away from the Lord. David showed himself to be a man after God’s own heart when he admitted both to Nathan and to himself, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die” (2 Sam. 12:13).
May the Lord help us to do so when the occasion arises.
