“He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. ¹² Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – ¹³ children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God” (John 1:11-13).

Not everybody is a child of God. There is a way by which we become child of God. You become a child of God by receiving Christ as your Lord and personal saviour. Not everyone rejected our Lord and saviour Jesus when He came to this earth. There were some who received Him and welcomed Him: and the Bible says, to them Jesus gave the right to become children of God. People fall into two categories. There are those who are the children of God and those who are not. Which category are you? God is preparing a place in heaven for His children. Are you one of His children? We can’t by force or achievement enter into fellowship with God. This is because we are human, and He is God. We can enter into it only through the way opened by Himself, which is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and saviour.

What God offers; we have to appropriate. Human parents may offer their children love, advice and friendship, and the children may refuse it and prefer to take their own way. It is so with God: God offers us the right to become His children, but we need to accept it. We accept it through believing in the name of Jesus Christ and receiving Him as our Lord and saviour. We can enter that true and real relationship only through Jesus Christ. This father and child relationship doesn’t come from the union of the seed of the father with the blood of the mother. The relationship doesn’t come from any human impulse or desire or from any act of the human will. “Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God” (John 1:13). We can only become children of God when we respond positively to the way God has provided. It’s only then, that we become children of God in the depth and intimacy of the true parent-and-child relationship.
