Insightful, Biblical Devotions
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. (John 17:3).
Most Christians believe that the main purpose of salvation is to avoid hell and go to heaven. They therefore spend their time on earth waiting to be taken to heaven. But that’s not the truth of the Gospel concerning salvation. If that’s the case, then those who receive Christ as their saviour would be translated straight to heaven, because heaven is a far better place than this earth.
Salvation is God rescuing humanity from our sinful condition. It’s about how we live – it’s about living a way of life and the early disciples followed that way. Salvation is about receiving eternal life; it’s about having a relationship with God. God’s main reason for sending Jesus was to give us eternal life and restore fellowship. From the prayers of Jesus in John 17, the Bible says; 1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. (John 17:1-3)
So, as you can see, the main purpose of your salvation is to know God and have a divine relationship with Him. It just so happens that aside the receipt of eternal life and the restoration of our relationship with God, the salvation package includes avoiding hell and gaining heaven. So, begin to live the eternal life that God has given you as a believer!
